PMI-funded hospital admissions hit another record high

Private medical insurance continues to play a growing role in UK healthcare access.
According to Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) data reported by Health & Insurance Magazine, there were 670,000 PMI-funded hospital admissions in 2025, up from 665,000 in 2024 — another record year.
Total private-funded hospital admissions also reached 953,000, the fourth year in a row at record levels.
A few points stood out:
• Insured admissions rose by around 1% year-on-year.
• The traditional split remained roughly 70% insured / 30% self-pay.
• Active consultants in private healthcare reached nearly 13,400, also a record high.
• Chemotherapy was the most common PMI-funded admission, with diagnostics also featuring strongly.
The message for employers is simple: private healthcare is no longer a niche benefit. For many organisations, it is becoming part of the wider conversation around access, wellbeing, retention and workforce support.
As always, the right answer depends on the business, the budget and the people being covered.
